Senior Moments By Barbara Mclullich With the Grand National taking place in Aintree in Liverpool, tomorrow, I thought you might like to know about a jockey's senior moment. Apparently Jockey Willie Shoemaker could have won the 1957 Kentucky Derby had the veteran jockey remembered where he was in the race. His horse Gallant Man, was in the lead as it came round the final turn but Willie mistook the 16th pole, which is the last one before the finish line, as the finish pole and he stood up in his stirrups in acclaim. The horse behind him carried on and won the race and Willie was suspended for 15 days for his memory lapse.
